1. the portion of a grafted (grafting) plant that provides the root; grafted (grafting) plants typically consist of a scion, which develops into the shoot or crown and a rootstock that provides the root system; rootstocks may include a signicant length of stem, called standards, commonly used for weeping trees or shrubs.
